In discussion with Lori Nachtegaele and Karrie Kramm, recreation therapists at BDCC and RHL, Parkinson said making these lap quilts is her therapy and that it “keeps my head going.” She also asked if these facilities were receiving quilts like these from the many quilters in the community. At both facilities, the staff said, “no.” Parkinson is challenging all other Battlefords area quilters to support local long-term care centers by donating quilts or lap robes. Quilting is a craft Parkinson learned from her mother, Mrs. Leite, when all quilts were hand sewn. The lap quilts she donated are sewn on her sewing machine.
Florence Dorene Anderson born June 28, 1935 at Wolseley, Saskatchewan passed away peacefully on May 16, 2016 in North Battleford. She is survived by her loving family, Lloyd, husband of 60 years, children Ken and his daughter Martine, Brian, Gwen and her husband Kemp, sister-in-laws Joyce, Myrtle and Rose and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Adrian and Doucia Bonneville, sisters, Rita, Lucille, Dorothy and Yvette and brother Rene. Florence grew up on a farm near Wolseley and travelled to school by horse and buggy with her younger brother. Her career was a bookkeeper where she worked at various businesses and banks in Regina and North Battleford. When Florence and Lloyd retired they purchased a winter home in Weslaco, Texas and spent 20 great winters there. One of the most special moments of her life was when her granddaughter was born. Holy Family School has been hosting a number of activities this past month for Lent. But due to restrictions they have moved a lot of their activities online with Facebook masses, virtual living rosary and daily prayer. This year, students were able to participate in Stations of the Cross through videos, during physical education exercises, and through prayers conducted in the gym area. Also changed for this year is their service to the community. Normally they are partnered with River Heights Lodge but they are unable to visit them this year; instead, they are keeping the residents there in their minds by creating Easter cards and gifts for the residents.
