In a grand event in Trichy, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M K Stalin unveiled the opposition party’s vision document that focussed on the overall development of Tamil Nadu, over the next decade. However, the announcements were quick to draw fire from the Actor Kamal Haasan, who accused the DMK of having lifted the points from a similar plan he unveiled in recent times. BJP members and supporters too had pointed out that the announcements made by Stalin were a re-packaged version of the Prime Minister’s pet projects.
DMK’s event in Trichy on Sunday evening which had lakhs of the Dravidian party’s supporters in attendance, was where Stalin released a vision document that covered seven major sectors: Economy, Agriculture, Water Resources, Education and Health, smart cities, and high-class rural infrastructure.
Among many new elements, two things stand out in the great Tamilian political game.
First, how long the Dravidian politics, unique to the state, would survive as the 21 century marches on?
Second, is Prime Minister Narendra Modi, still considered an outsider in the state, effective enough to change the fundamental terms of the Tamilian politics?
In the ongoing election campaigning for the 234 seats of the assembly, people are missing the towering personalities of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) patriarch M. Karunanidhi, state’s five time chief minister who died in 2018 and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (AIDMK) strong leader J. Jayalalithaa, six time chief minister who died in December 2016. There are no charismatic giants in the electoral battlefield and that’s not normal for Tamil voters.
