ASUCR continues to advocate for a safe campus reopening

Highlander ASUCR – Ryan Poon /The Highlander On Wednesday, April 14, ASUCR held their first State of the Association meeting of the spring quarter, where members of the Executive Cabinet briefed the senate on updates that they have had over the past few weeks.  SR-S21-005 Campus Advocacy for Reopening with Equity Act was presented by President Pro Tempore Orlando Cabalo and outlined the senate’s commitment to providing updates to the student body surrounding the ongoing changes to the UCR campus reopening. The resolution states that ASUCR President Luis Huerta will report weekly with updates from the Instructional/Academic Continuity Working Group and other important information regarding campus reopening up until the end of his term. 

ASUCR to allocate $40,000 annually for student basic needs

The senate approved two resolutions that will support UCR’s commitment to 100% clean energy and implement American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture classes into UCR’s curriculum. They also approved a senate bill that will permanently allocate $40,000 for student basic needs every year.  During public comment, many students and members of CALPIRG expressed their support for SR-S21-004 Support for 100% Renewable Energy at UCR. The students cited the California wildfires and Riverside’s poor air quality as signs of the damaging effects climate change can have on the planet and urged the senate to vote yes on the resolution. 

ASUCR 2021 candidates announced

Highlander Lloyd Kao / The Highlander On Wednesday, March 31, ASUCR held their first meeting of spring quarter where they discussed updates to the upcoming ASUCR Elections and passed a resolution advocating for a safe, in-person graduation ceremony. Elections Director Lama Yassine updated the senate on the timeline for the upcoming ASUCR elections. Next week, the elections committee will begin hosting Candidates Conventions for both senators and those running for the executive branch, giving each candidate the opportunity to discuss their platforms. Voting Week is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 19.  Yassine also announced the candidates who will be running in the 2021 ASUCR Elections. They are:
