Soybean numbers show tight supplies moving forward

Since December, numerous rumblings have inferred U.S. corn exports were too low. At that time many had projected U.S. corn exports would be increasing 200 million to 300 million bushels with corn ending stocks shrinking a similar amount. The frustration has been high as USDA seemed stuck in a rut with the January, February, and March WASDE reports unchanged. At those times a common thread suggested USDA was merely “punting,” kicking the can down the road waiting for more information in particular to South America corn production in Brazil and Argentina.  Last month China purchased 4 million tons, or 157 million bushels of U.S. corn. Yet, corn prices were unable to break above the highs seen in early February. In February and March, both corn and soybeans were firmly entrenched in a sideways price pattern. The March 31 USDA Perspective Planting Report was a bullish surprise, a game changer which had both corn and soybeans locked up their respective daily limits of 25 cents and 7

Soybean acres up in Northeast

Wheat and hay acreage also is up, except in Pennsylvania. Corn acres are down in most states, but wheat acreage is up along with hay acres except in Pennsylvania. If you’re a cash crop producer, 2021 is shaping up to be a great year. If you’re a livestock producer, challenges await. That’s the general sentiment from analysts based on USDA’s Prospective Planting Report for 2021. Farmers are expected to plant 91.1 million acres of corn, up less than 1% from last year; 87.6 million acres of soybeans, up 5% from last year; and 46.4 million acres of wheat, also up 5% but the fourth-lowest since records began in 1919.

Grain sorghum hybrids top 160 bushels

Mindy Ward HIGH YIELDS: Grain sorghum producers saw impressive yields in 2020. The MU Variety Testing Program put more than 20 hybrids to the test in four locations across Missouri. Farmer interest brings grain sorghum trials back to the University of Missouri. Grain sorghum, or milo, is not a top crop in Missouri. However, Mark Wieberg says results from this year’s MU Variety Testing Program may have farmers taking another look at this feed grain. “It is one of those crops that costs less money to put in versus corn,” the University of Missouri senior research specialist responsible for MU’s Variety Testing Program says of grain sorghum. “And regardless of how wet or dry, you can knock a consistent yield off of it.”
