Ronan Tynan: Fireman s Friend | Irish America

In December, as a tribute to his contribution to the Fire Department both before and since the September 11 attacks, Irish tenor Ronan Tynan was made an honorary firefighter. Tynan’s affinity with the New York Fire Department goes back a long way. In 1984, at the New York Paralympics, he became friendly with some firefighters. This longstanding friendship led him to offer to sing at the funerals of two of the three firefighters who were killed in the Father’s Day tragedy in New York in June 2001. It was at these funerals that he met Deputy Fire Chief Ray Downey, who was to be one of the many firefighters to lose his life on September 11 and at whose memorial Ronan would later sing. After the attacks on September 11, Ronan went back to New York from Washington, where he had been due to sing at the Pentagon, and tried to help where he could. Despite its crowdedness, I did enjoy my time there. I think it does an excellent job of beautifying the already beautiful Manhattan ambiance. Likewise, the park is filled to the brim with bees, making it particularly environmentally friendly. Ideally, in all locations globally, we should want there to be new parks, infrastructure and places of culture to flourish. And now, “The City That Never Sleeps” is adding one more space to its catalog Little Island which is now open for visitation as of May 21, 2021. “Our idea is for a visitor to leave the city as if going to Oz, to this whimsical, playful little island in the river”, says Signe Nielsen of landscape firm Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects. “And the first part of what we hope is a fun experience is the journey to the island. Women on the Water J80 Crews Back in Action at National Yacht Club 24th May 2021 File image from the 2019 Women at the Helm regatta Sailing will be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons, in two series of one week each to prepare for DBSC racing which is planned to run until 25 September. Interest is high so the NYC encourages anyone who wants to sail to act quickly. Sailing is organised by Women on the Water but is open to all members and new crew are always welcome.
