Spanish Jewish group condemns antisemitic march by Neo-Nazis in Madrid

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) has condemned a march by Neo-Nazis in the center of Madrid featuring antisemitic speeches and the Nazi salute. “We consider it unacceptable that in a solid democracy under the rule of law such as Spain, such remarks go unpunished,” the Jewish organisation said. “That is why we demand that the Office of the Prosecutor for Hate Crimes investigate this incident and, where appropriate, prosecute and condemn these criminal acts.” About 300 people attended the event held near a cemetery in the Spanish capital where veterans of the Blue Division who fought alongside Hitler’s troops are buried. In one speech, a young woman was filmed saying: “Our duty is to fight for Spain and Europe now weakened by the enemy, which remains the same but wears many masks: the Jew.”

UCL board rejects IHRA definition of antisemitism

It follows a report published in December by a working group of UCL academics that warned the IHRA definition conflates anti-Jewish prejudice with political debate over Israel and Palestine, which could have “potentially deleterious effects on free speech, such as instigating a culture of fear or self-silencing on teaching or research or classroom discussion of contentious topics”. The IHRA definition is only 40 words long. It says: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities.”
