(Michal Cizek / AFP) PRAGUE Czech churches on Monday denounced what they said was the cynicism of anti-vaccine protesters who wore the Star of David inscribed with “unvaxxed” at a rally last week. The activists were abusing a symbol of Nazi persecution of the Jews during World War II, church leaders argued. Officials from the Czech Bishops’ Conference, the Ecumenical Council of Churches and the Federation of Jewish Communities condemned their action in a joint statement.

The Czech Jewish community strongly condemned the use of yellow stars on Friday by protesters during a march against the country’s coronavirus restrictions. ROMEA, a local anti-racism NGO, reported that the protest, which took place in Prague, saw demonstrators wearing yellow stars in the same style as those that Holocaust victims were forced to wear under Nazi persecution. The stars were marked with the words “unvaccinated” in the center. In response, the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic issued a strong condemnation.

Because they also matter: Changing our aliyah preception

Why people who had a stablished life in the other part of the world, decide to leave everything behind and move to a country so different in so many ways? Answering these questions became almost an obsession during my first two years in Israel.  As an 18-year-old yeshiva student from Mexico and later on as a soldier, my general perception was that people made aliyah due to a sense of obligation or belonging to the Jewish state and towards Judaism. I wasn’t totally wrong; it was the answer that I got every time I asked. A problem started when I stopped asking, I wrongly assumed that everyone had the same reason.
