Gouldsboro budget increases by 8.45 percent GOULDSBORO It took an untold number of peppermints, microphone malfunctions, mask-hampered discourse and 16 hours of number crunching on often bitter-cold nights for the town’s Budget Committee to finalize and present a 2021-22 municipal budget of $1.992 million to selectmen last Wednesday night. The spending plan is up 8.54 percent over the $1.835 million budgeted for this fiscal year. The proposal, which does not include school or county costs, was delivered a month early and will be voted on at the annual Town Meeting June 9. What does ‘Second Amendment sanctuary’ actually mean? Absolutely nothing. Try as they might to fight for local gun-rights refuges, proponents are firing blanks. Few sayings drive me more to distraction these days than “out of an abundance of caution.” What does it actually mean? That good old-fashioned caution no longer cuts it? That we’re only being truly cautious if we go overboard? That we can’t be too careful in these perilous times? I have no idea. But now, as I peruse the news from all over Maine, I find myself snagged on an equally perplexing idiom. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the “Second Amendment sanctuary.”
