Residents in the camp were given advanced notice of the city’s intent to reclaim the downtown property where dozens of tents stood and the city arranged for a temporary shelter at City Rescue Mission in an attempt to provide resources to overcome the circumstances that led residents into homelessness. In addition to providing basic needs, City Rescue Mission case managers are supposed to work with people at the shelter to help them come up with personalized plans to get back on their feet.

On Tuesday, the city of Jacksonville plans to move the homeless living in the camp into a nearby, indoor shelter for the next 30 days. Last month, 46 people from this camp were placed in extended-living hotels last month, but the number of people in the camp kept growing with more people needing help. “It grieves me that I have an open bed and someone is living in the tent,” said Paul Stasi of the City Rescue Mission.

People in homeless shelters, jails and prisons were able to get their COVID-19 vaccinations on Monday.Officials with the City Rescue Mission said vaccinating the homeless community is crucial to getting Oklahoma back to normal. Dozens were at the City Rescue Mission on Monday getting the Moderna vaccine.Erin Goodin, the president of the City Rescue Mission, said the goal is to vaccinate anybody and everybody that walks through the door.“Our clients lined up and started getting their vaccinations,” Goodin said.Fifty people were able to get vaccinated, Goodin told KOCO 5.“We didn’t have any requirements. As long as they were a resident here and wanted a shot, we gave them a shot today,” Goodin said.Because the Moderna shot requires two doses, she said it can be a bit trickier to make sure her clients receive the second dose.“Homeless shelters are very transient populated, so we will offer on different occasions additional first doses along with the second dose,” Good

The city of Jacksonville wasted no time Tuesday morning as a deadline arrived for people to move out of the camp, which has been referred to as “tent city.” The doors closed at 10 p.m. Tuesday and only people who work a night shift were permitted to enter. As of 11 p.m., a volunteer said, there were about 45 people inside the shelter.
