City of Cape Town cautions residents against approaching cold front Share An intense cold front is expected to make landfall by Sunday evening leading into Morning morning and heavy downpours are expected. This is according to an advisory from the South African Weather Service. The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) is on standby to deal with any incidents related to an expected frontal system. The South African Weather Service has advised that the cold front is expected to make landfall by this evening, with rain of between 40- 60 mm expected over the metropole on Monday. “Two cold fronts will be affecting the Western and Northern Cape from tomorrow (Monday 28 June 2021). Heavy rain leading to localized flooding, strong winds, cold temperatures and rough seas can be expected. In contrast, north-eastern provinces will have a mild to warm week,” said the South African Weather Service in a tweet.

UCT scrambles to recover valuable material lost in library fire By Sisonke Mlamla Share Cape Town - The UCT community, including the alumni, have urged researchers around the world who have photocopies or images of documents destroyed in the Jagger Library fire to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records. Dr Maha Rafi Atal, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Copenhagen Business School in Frederiksberg, Denmark, took an initiative to establish a registry of copies of materials that researchers have among their research collections. Atal, who is collecting the information online, said in light of the fire at UCT on Sunday, academics and other researchers around the world who have worked in those special collections and have taken photocopies or mobile phone images of documents may be able to contribute those to help recover some of the lost records.

Cape Town fire latest: Residents can return home as damage is assessed The impact of the devastating Cape Town fires is currently being assessed, with damage to several buildings and infrastructure reported. With the Cape Town fire now declared under control, the time has come for the City and residents affected by the devastating blaze to assess the significant damage incurred over the past three days.  Evacuated residents and students from the University of Cape Town (UCT) are now being urged to begin returning to their homes and residences (the latter of which under the guidance of the university) and assessments have begun to determine the extent of the damage to infrastructure around the affected areas.
