STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. State Sen. Andrew Lanza is among a growing list of politicians upset by the city’s decision to remove Columbus Day from the Department of Education’s (DOE) calendar.
On Tuesday, the DOE released the 2021-2022 public school calendar which shows Indigenous Peoples Day on the second Monday of October, which this year falls on Oct. 11, the day that has typically been Columbus Day.

POLICE UNIONS MAKE PICKS FOR CITY COUNCIL
Politicians running for two of the Island’s City Council seats earned endorsements from the city’s police unions over the past week and a half.
Democratic candidate Sal Albanese, a former City Councilman from Brooklyn and candidate for the Mid-Island seat, earned the endorsement Tuesday of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA), Sergeants Benevolent Association (SBA), Lieutenants Benevolent Association (LBA), and Detectives’ Endowment Association (DEA).

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) held an informational town hall Thursday evening aiming to combat the “unfathomable” jump in phone scams targeting borough residents.
“We want to be here on the Island to make sure that we have the tools to fight back, the information and the support to fight back,” said Matteo during the virtual meeting with borough residents. “It’s a full-court press. They’re getting smarter, so we have to get smarter than they are.”
S.I. scams continue! Oakwood man, 91, duped of $12K in grandson-bail scheme

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Police are investigating a report that a 91-year-old man from Oakwood was conned out of $12,000 in a shockingly common scam used by criminals who prey on seniors for financial gain.
The man told police that he received a phone call from an unknown individual pretending to be his grandson. The caller said that $12,000 was needed to bail the grandson out of jail, according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
The victim went to a package-delivery store and sent cash in a parcel.
