STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The NYPD’s newly appointed chief of department comes with decades of experience in law enforcement, and a lifetime of perspective as a Black man in America.
In a recent interview with the Advance/SILive.com, Chief Rodney Harrison spoke about his upbringing in the Rochdale Village section of Queens, a predominantly Black community with historical ties to the civil rights movement, as well as the future of policing and high crime rates.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. District Attorney Michael E. McMahon and City Council Minority Leader Steven Matteo (R-Mid-Island) held an informational town hall Thursday evening aiming to combat the “unfathomable” jump in phone scams targeting borough residents.
“We want to be here on the Island to make sure that we have the tools to fight back, the information and the support to fight back,” said Matteo during the virtual meeting with borough residents. “It’s a full-court press. They’re getting smarter, so we have to get smarter than they are.”

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Police are investigating a report that a 91-year-old man from Oakwood was conned out of $12,000 in a shockingly common scam used by criminals who prey on seniors for financial gain.
The man told police that he received a phone call from an unknown individual pretending to be his grandson. The caller said that $12,000 was needed to bail the grandson out of jail, according to a spokesman for the NYPD.
The victim went to a package-delivery store and sent cash in a parcel.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. The NYPD has announced another round of “Build the Block” meetings, where Staten Island residents can discuss concerns about crime and public safety with officers assigned to their community.
The initiative first was laid out by the department in 2015, in which neighborhood coordination officers patrol the same streets consistently in an effort to familiarize themselves with local residents and prevent crime from occurring.
