National Guard, Altus emergency personnel join for training exercise

ALTUS, Okla. (TNN) - The Oklahoma National Guard’s 63rd Civil Support Team joined emergency personnel from the City of Altus for a 72-hour field exercise that spanned from May 4 to May 6.
The 63rd CST is a special purpose unit of the Oklahoma National Guard that provides expert support to civilian first responders during natural and man-made disasters.
The Altus training is part of a series of training exercises that are designed to improve the National Guard unit’s ability to work with local emergency management personnel and first responders.

Altus, Okla. (TNN) - According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, Oklahoma ranked 13th in the nation for states with the most cases of child abuse in 2019. Director of Altusâ Great Plains Youth and Family Services, Kim Rumschlag, said that number has likely gone up.
âRight now Oklahoma has approximately about 15,000 substantiated cases of child abuse and neglect. When school was shut down . sometimes school is a a childsâ safe haven, sometimes thatâs the only place where they get a meal. When kids were not able to go to school they were at home with their abuser all day long maybe,â she said.

ALTUS, Okla. (TNN) - City of Altus Mayor Jack Smiley announced on Wednesday that he is rescinding all of his COVID-19 Emergency Orders effective immediately.
Altus residents and visitors will no longer be required to wear facial coverings inside Altus city limits or face penalties for failure to wear them. Businesses should also remove any signage indicating that facial coverings inside their businesses are required by the Mayor or the City of Altus.
Officials say businesses and residents should continue to follow active Executive Orders issued by the Governor of Oklahoma and follow guidelines issued by the CDC, though.
