LANSING – A man who reportedly sped away from police after they tried to to stop him on a weapons matter surrendered peacefully following a standoff in a west Lansing neighborhood on Monday afternoon.
The incident began about 2:18 p.m. when Lansing officers and Michigan State Police troopers tried to stop a driver at Washington and Oakland avenues, Lansing police said.
The driver ran his car into a trooper s vehicle and sped off, touching off a pursuit that ended when the suspect s vehicle crashed on West Ottawa Street, near Westmoreland Street, on the city s west side, police said.

Michigan State Police have bolstered their presence in Benton Harbor with the addition of the new Fifth District Crime Prevention Squad. Lieutenant DeWayne Robinson tells WSJM News the squad is in addition to the MSP Secure Cities Partnership in the city, and increases the number of troopers in town. The squad was added in April and will continue through October.
“Our goal is just to make the streets safer, to combat violent crime where it’s present, and to prevent it just by our presence as well,” Robinson said.
Robinson says the state police presence in Benton Harbor is about crime prevention and also about building a bond with residents. He says troopers are told to get out of the cars and talk with children when they’re seen playing.

The Scottish Retail Consortium urged shoppers to queue considerately and be mindful over distancing and mask-wearing after “four long months of closure” for shops.
It expects an “initial surge” as customers venture out but said the “real test will be how this holds up”.
Director David Lonsdale said: “Retailers have spent millions of pounds to make shops Covid-secure for customers and colleagues.
