The 2021 MLB Draft starts on Sunday at 6 p.m. Central on MLB Network and ESPN, running for 20 rounds, shortened from the typical 40 rounds, and lasting through Tuesday.
The Texas Longhorns should see right-hander Ty Madden selected in the first round he’s the No. 19 prospect overall by ESPN. A Texas starting pitcher has not gone in the first round since Taylor Jungmann and the Longhorns haven’t had any player selected that highly since reliever Cory Knebel was picked No. 39 in 2013.
Here’s a look at how the draft could shake out for Texas and its small group of 2021 signees.

Texas loses to Mississippi State 4-3 in walk-off fashion

Texas Longhorns reliever Cole Quintanilla was sensational through most of his 3.1 innings in relief, but a 1-2 hit by pitch, stolen base, and a single by defensive replacement Tanner Leggett allowed the Mississippi State Bulldogs to win in walk-off fashion in a 4-3 victory at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on Saturday to end a sensational Texas season.
It was the only lead of the game for the Bulldogs and the only loss of the season for Quintanilla.
With bullpen arms like Tanner Witt and Aaron Nixon either not available or likely not available, Quintanilla had his longest outing of the season and pitched incredibly well until the hit by pitch that led to the walk-off hit.

Mississippi State charged back in the bottom of the eighth in the Bracket 2 final of the 2021 College World Series to tie it at 5-5. Texas put two runners on in the top of the ninth, bringing Ivan Melendez to the plate.
Texas’ leader in home runs worked a 3-2 count against MSU’s Parker Stinnett. With rain falling at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, Stinnett offered Melendez a fastball.
