Get Growing with Mickey Rathbun: A garden for all to enjoy

Get Growing with Mickey Rathbun: A garden for all to enjoy Nancy D’Amato by the stump that she has planted with columbine and other Sedums at the North Amherst Library garden. “I just think it has coalesced into a soup of interesting mix of colors and shapes. It either applies to you are you think what a pointless mess,” said D’Amato. STAFF PHOTO/CAROL LOLLIS The North Amherst Library garden. The Lehrer Report: May 7, 2021

The Lehrer Report: May 7, 2021 Monday, May 10, 2021 Print Flora and fauna report: The lilacs have bloomed. The initial radish seeds I planted did nothing so I planted more. After the rain last week, all popped up. The cardinals, squirrel and chipmunk have been in the yard and I wondered where the bunny and snake were my perennial backyard fauna. The bunny appeared on Sunday. I usually notice the snake when I mow the lawn so it will be any day now. Kathleen Teagno of Amherst sent me the news with sad regrets. The Garden Club of Amherst will not hold its plant sale on the Town Common. This is now the second year the sale has been canceled. However, she said they will be under the tent next year. At that time, the offerings should be enormous after two years of growth without trimming.

Snowdrops help me put winter in perspective

Snowdrops help me put winter in perspective Getty Images/iStockphoto Published: 10/5/2018 10:07:59 AM As I write this, there are still plenty of flowers in the garden and green leaves on the trees. But fall is definitely in the air, a bittersweet time for those of us who dread the winter that’s not far behind. Thinking ahead to next spring’s flowering bulbs helps me put winter in perspective. A season to let things sleep underground. A season to marvel, and shiver, at meteorological extremes. A season that might seem endless but will, in fact, draw to a close as snowdrops (Galanthus) emerge.
