UBC, UNB receive funding from feds, Bell for innovation programming
The Government of Canada and Bell each recently announced planned investments in cleantech and cybersecurity development totalling $3.1 million at two Canadian universities.
Through Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD), the federal government is investing $1.9 million to fund the creation of a cleantech innovation hub at the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Okanagan campus. Across the country, telecom giant Bell is investing $1.2 million to support a comprehensive cybersecurity education program offered through the University of New Brunswick (UNB).
The projects seek to address the climate crisis and shortage of skilled cybersecurity workers.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has already triggered an economic recession, with a direct impact on production and sales. Not only that, but critical functions such as Intellectual Property foresee an impact as R&D centers expect to receive budgetary cuts on the non-product development activities. But there is a silver lining to all of this as this happens to be the right time and opportunity to focus on IP.
The process of managing innovation is often unstructured and could benefit from adopting some of the best practices that are being tested in most of the R&D organizations. This summer, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) awarded over $42 million in Youth Apprenticeship Readiness grants to 14 organizations to increase youth participation in new or existing Registered Apprenticeship Programs (RAPs). This investment marks the first federal initiative targeted specifically at youth apprenticeship since the School-to-Work Opportunities Act nearly 25 years ago, and will provide resources to expand apprenticeship opportunities at a critical time for young adults. In particular, the investment encourages programs to improve apprenticeship access and outcomes for historically underserved populations, including women, people of color, ex-offenders, persons with disabilities, youth with barriers to employment, and out-of-school youth.
