Sask final financial report better than expected

Harpauer attributed the improved final numbers to well-performing revenue categories and lower-than-budgeted agriculture, environment and education expenses. Revenue for the 2020-21 year is up $875 million from projection, or 6.4 per cent. for a total of $14.52 billion. All categories performed better than anticipated, said Harpauer, with the exception of taxation. “We’ve had much stronger returns on investments, in particular from SGI and the Workers’ Compensation Board,” said Harpauer. COVID regulations caused a decline in economic activity, said Harpauer’s report, and a deterioration in corporation income and individual income taxes. Two transfers of COVID-19 funding from the federal government offset these decreases and aided provincial revenue. Consumption taxes also increased due to high prices and demand in industries like oil, natural gas and forestry and the Government Business Enterprises also drew a notable increase in net income.

Saskatchewan Reports Lower Deficit in Fiscal 2020-2021 Than Initially Forecast

By Ryan Young Jun 30, 2021 | 6:43 PM Saskatchewan’s deficit has decreased more than what was anticipated at the end of the fiscal year. The provincial government announced Wednesday that the deficit has fallen to $1.13 billion to end 2020-2021 – a decrease of $1.3 billion. Finance Minister Donna Harpauer reminded that it’s still a deficit and there are concerns, but she called it an improvement from their $2.4-billion deficit projection in the budget. Harpauer said there were a number of factors that contributed to the decrease thanks to both higher-than-budgeted revenue and lower-than-budgeted expense. “Revenue side, we had two transfers from the federal government that was significant for their programs regarding COVID, and in addition we had much stronger returns in investments in the Crown corporations such as in SGI and the Workers’ Compensation Board,” explained Harpauer.
