The Union wins several awards in annual contest

The Union newspaper won a handful of awards in the 2020 California Journalism Awards Contest. The paper took fifth place in General Excellence, a category that includes all papers with a daily circulation of 15,000 or under. The Union Publisher Don Rogers lauded the newspaper’s contest wins. “What’s most important to me is that we are the very best we can be for our communities every day,” Rogers said. “Having our colleagues recognize our work is both icing and a sign of being on the right track, especially with such a challenging year.” Staff Writer Liz Kellar took a fourth place award in Breaking News for “’Tragic:’ Man shot, killed after pointing Airsoft rifle at law enforcement.” The story focused on the officer-involved shooting death of Gabriel Strickland.

Two subjects arrested for string of lower Colfax area thefts

Taylor Rae Fletcher Two suspects linked to a series of thefts in the Lower Colfax Road area remained jailed Monday, authorities said. The suspects are identified as James Jordan Zinola, 30, and Taylor Rae Fletcher, 27, both residents of western Nevada County. Each has been booked under felony grand theft and conspiracy charges, with bail set at $20,000, reports state. According to sheriff’s Sgt. Shane Peltzer, Zinola and Fletcher were delivering newspapers for The Union, and based on the timing of the thefts they are charged with, appear to have committed these while on delivery routes. Fletcher was a contracted carrier for The Union for under a week. Zinola was not contracted by the newspaper, said Megan Ford, the paper’s circulation director.

Hits & Misses in Nevada County: A HIT to all heroes

Each week we’ll run through the sublime, the trivial and profound issues, decisions and goings on that strike us as Hits or Misses. You can join in, too, by emailing your Hits & Misses to editboard@theunion.com. A big, huge HIT (from reader Christiana Kelly): to Kaleb Bentham, who saved his beloved dog from a bear. And to Motherlode Vet Hospital for working on Buddy the dog for hours to save him. Heroes, all. HIT (from reader George Carter): Home for the holidays is a fervent wish for many, particularly those with no place to call home. In Saturday’s The Union, Lorraine Larson put it well saying “our homes have become the center of more than we ever thought they would or could be.” That amplifies the contribution to our community provided by Habitat for Humanity. Helping families have a “decent, safe, affordable home” is what Habitat is all about. The need and the work continues, thanks to our generous community.
