More support for rural and regional students
Students from regional and remote communities can now apply for scholarships worth up to $18,000 to help meet the cost of university or other tertiary education and training.
Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said the latest round of the Government’s Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program will help 700 commencing students access tertiary education opportunities this year, from Certificate IV to PhD level.
“We are helping more students from regional and remote Australia, into higher education so they can get a qualification and get into a job,” Minister Tudge said.

Royal Australian College of GPs
The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is encouraging more rural and remote GPs to update their skills using the latest research to support patients with alcohol and other drug (AOD) use problems in their communities.
Under the $7.9 million initiative funded by the Federal Government the RACGP is delivering the Alcohol and Other Drugs GP Education Program, which is tailored to meet the needs of GPs in all corners of Australia.
The program encourages participation from rural and remote GPs and includes:
· essential skills training to provide an update for GPs wanting to improve their approach to conversations about alcohol and other drug use. It is now available to all RACGP members through a self-directed e-learning module on gplearning

Colombia: Protection Gaps Endanger Rights Defenders - Over 400 Killings of Community, Other Leaders Since 2016
(Washington, DC) Armed group killings of human rights defenders are pervasive across Colombia, yet the government is dragging its feet in carrying out policies to prevent them, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today.
The 127-page report, Left Undefended: Killings of Rights Defenders in Colombia s Remote Communities, documents killings of human rights defenders in the country in the last five years, as well as serious shortcomings in government efforts to prevent them, protect defenders, and hold those responsible to account. Over 400 human rights defenders have been killed in Colombia since 2016, according to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
