STAAR testing smooth day after system failure

STAAR testing resumed at Central Texas school districts Wednesday, the day after a system failure prompted many Texas districts to delay or cancel testing. Temple Independent School District reported that testing at two campuses was held without interruptions in the online Educational Testing Service system. “Testing went smoothly today,” Lisa Adams, TISD’s assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, said Wednesday. “We had two campuses test today, and there were not any technical errors. However, tomorrow will be a better indicator of ETS ability to handle a greater load as we will have nine campuses testing.” On Tuesday, a system failure prevented districts from administering tests online. Students were often unable to log in to the test. If they could do so, slow response times hampered students.

Charge dropped in assault case involving KISD spokeswoman, former anchorwoman

The McLennan County District Attorney’s Office has declined to prosecute a misdemeanor family assault charge involving the chief public information officer for the Killeen Independent School District. Taina Maya, 33, KISD chief of communications and marketing, was arrested by Waco police Oct. 14, 2020, after a verbal argument with her husband allegedly had turned physical. She told the Herald previously that she and her husband called the police in order to keep the argument from escalating. On Feb. 3, the DA’s office did not accept the case because “successful prosecution (was) unlikely,” according to a report obtained by the Herald from McLennan County.
