Des Moines and other central Iowa communities are digging out from a winter storm that brought about a half a foot of snow to central Iowa communities.
The western half of Iowa was under a blizzard warning from midnight Thursday through much of Friday morning. And while that warning was changed to a winter weather advisory for much of central Iowa, western Iowa remains under a blizzard warning until 6 p.m. Friday.

The 9.6 inches of snow that fell in Des Moines on Tuesday stretched the preliminary running total for this month to 17.1 inches. That narrowly bests the 17 inches that fell in the capital city in December 1888, which previously ranked tenth.
