In West London, at one of 24 sites serving the London’s 25km Thames Tideway Tunnel project, a complex excavation job required special attention from engineers.
Tideway Tunnel will run from Acton in the west of London to Abbey Mills in the east. It will mostly run underneath the tidal section of the river Thames and will collect, store and convey to treatment works downstream almost all of the raw sewage and rainwater that currently overflows into the river.

Its products are used to ensure the containment of smoke, fire, toxic gases and blast waves in accidental conditions via the ventilation system. Following growing success overseas, Flamgard is now projecting record breaking turnover for 2021, which it aims to double by 2025 by expanding its international portfolio of clients and penetrating new sectors within established geographical areas.

Like so much of the UK economy, the construction sector was severely disrupted by the impact of COVID-19 throughout 2020 and now faces a challenging recovery.
Although classed as an essential service, the immediate reaction to the first lockdown was for contractors to close sites, halting activity across the sector. This, of course, contrasts with the situation so far during the winter, with Office for National Statistics survey data indicating that just 2 per cent of UK construction firms had paused trading in the final two weeks of 2020 and intended to remain closed in the new year.
