HS2 and Hinkley: civils bounceback underpins a brighter 2021

Like so much of the UK economy, the construction sector was severely disrupted by the impact of COVID-19 throughout 2020 and now faces a challenging recovery.
Although classed as an essential service, the immediate reaction to the first lockdown was for contractors to close sites, halting activity across the sector. This, of course, contrasts with the situation so far during the winter, with Office for National Statistics survey data indicating that just 2 per cent of UK construction firms had paused trading in the final two weeks of 2020 and intended to remain closed in the new year.
