Snow on the way, but no white Christmas

The Cullman area will certainly begin to feel like the North Pole on Christmas Eve, but locals will likely wake up Christmas morning only to a cold, clear day — with the few flakes of snow that might fall on the night before Christmas already a fleeting memory. Forecasters for the Huntsville office of the National Weather Service do expect some light snow showers today as temperatures plunge behind a front carrying rainfall, which could change over to snow between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. But except in a few high-elevation places in North Alabama, they don’t expect any significant snow accumulation — much less for it to stick around on Friday.

Residents in the Hudson Valley are preparing for the season s first nor easter. The storm is expected to move into the region about 6 p.m. and leave around 9 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, said Matt Rinde, AccuWeather senior meteorologist.  At the height of the storm, somewhere between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., we will see snowfall rates between one to two inches of snow per hour, Rinde said. And of course it s going to be windy, so you re going to have blowing and drifting snow throughout the storm.
