Print WBAL NewsRadio 1090 and FM 101.5 Hearst Radio’s WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 earned recognition Thursday from the Radio Television Digital News Association with a pair of Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards. Awarded annually since 1971, the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards are named in honor of the legendary broadcaster and recognize outstanding work in broadcast and digital journalism. WBAL NewsRadio 1090/FM 101.5 was honored in the category of Breaking News coverage for its coverage of an August 2020 row home explosion in Baltimore. It is the station’s third consecutive Regional Murrow Award in this category, also earning a National Murrow Award for Breaking News in 2020.

NCPR news team wins two regional Edward R Murrow awards

May 07, 2021 North Country Public Radio has won two regional journalism awards for its news coverage in 2020. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced this week that NCPR is the recipient of Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in the Sports Coverage and Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. The Murrow Awards are among the oldest and most prestigious honoring broadcast journalists. The full news team, including former reporters Julia Ritchey and Natasha Haverty, was recognized for its ongoing coverage, “Reckoning on Race in the North Country.” It included numerous radio and digital stories, special features, and outreach produced over months, as the region dealt with challenging, complex, and emotional issues of race following the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.

“The regional RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award recipients we announce today produced extraordinary journalism that brought clarity and context to 2020’s biggest news stories,” said RTDNA Chairwoman Andrea Stahlman. “The winning work demonstrates dedication, determination and a commitment to the highest ethical standards enshrined in RTDNA’s Code of Ethics.” In addition to 50 Overall Excellence awards, the regional honors recognize dozens of digital projects, more than 40 examples of investigative reporting and over 100 examples of continuing or series coverage of ongoing stories. In a new category for 2021, more than 40 news outlets earned regional Murrow Awards for Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, including examples of bilingual reporting, contextual coverage of inequality and discrimination, and newsroom-convened community discussions.

WKSU Wins Two Regional Murrow Awards

WKSU 89.7 recently received two Regional Murrow Awards from the Radio Television Digital News Association. WKSU was recognized in the categories of News Series and Excellence in Video. The category of News Series is for single subjects reported in multiple parts. In early 2020, the WKSU news team tackled the topic of recycling with the series Reduce, Reuse, Refocus. Multiple features provided information on everything from how recycling works to what can – or can’t – be recycled. For the Excellence in Video category, videos must creatively cover a single subject in a single subject.
