Here, she sits at her kitchen table talking about the challenges and struggles of being autistic, and the blessing of finally being diagnosed later in life. Debra Brisch knew her whole life that she was different, but she always felt like there was something wrong with her. Until now. After lifelong confusion, isolation, and social struggles, Brisch, now 69, was finally diagnosed with autism a few years ago. Since then, she has set out on a mission to spread the word about adult autism, and encourage seniors to look into getting a diagnosis and support if they suspect they may be autistic.

That encompasses four complex, brain-based disorders that affect a person’s behavior as well as social and communication skills. Those four disorders are: autistic disorder, childhood disintegrating disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PPD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome.

Autism walk organized to raise awareness

BARBOURSVILLE — Dressed in blue and hoping to make a difference, people headed to Barboursville Park on Saturday in an effort to raise awareness about autism. The autism walk was organized by members of the Education Committee of the Pea Ridge Woman’s Club. The community was invited to participate in the event, which took place at Lake William in the park. Participants were asked to wear blue in observance of April as National Autism Awareness Month. Proceeds from the event will be given to the Autism Services Center, West Virginia Autism Training Center and Autism Society River Cities.

According to Autism Speaks, in 2020 the CDC reported that one in 54 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with autism. Autism can be reliably diagnosed as early as the age of two, but most children are still being diagnosed after the age of four. The core symptoms of autism are social communication challenges and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Many children with autism also have sensory issues and can be over sensitized by touch, taste, light, pain and other stimuli.
