Courtesy David Doubilet/Undersea Images A jaw-dropping report last month in the Journal Nature reported that many species of sharks are at the point of no return. “We find that, since 1970, the global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays has declined by 71% owing to an 18-fold increase in relative fishing pressure,” the report reads. “This depletion has increased the global extinction risk to the point at which three-quarters of the species comprising this functionally important assemblage are threatened with extinction.” For decades, Clayton residents David Doubilet and Jennifer S. Instead, theatres across the region remain dark for the 49th consecutive week. But there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Mesa Arts Center offers 3 big events this month

Social distancing might be tough on live performances and exhibits, but three events in Mesa show the arts scene is far from being defeated by the pandemic. The Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum at the Mesa Arts Center has opened its 42nd annual Contemporary Crafts Exhibition, featuring local and other artists whose works have “become a benchmark for innovation and quality,” organizers said.  The exhibition features ceramics, fibers, basketry, metals, wood, glass, jewelry, papermaking and book arts. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended.
