On April 7, we celebrate National Beer Day to commemorate the date President Franklin Roosevelt re-legalized beer months ahead of all other alcohol beverages when prohibition was ended by the 21st Amendment in 1933. As we celebrate National Beer Day with our favorite Oregon brew, we should reflect on what makes beer possible. Most people know the key ingredients for beer are water, grain, yeast and hops. But few realize there is a fifth ingredient needed to produce most beer natural gas.

Of course, the 18th Amendment wouldn t be officially repealed until December of that year. Every April 7, people across the country celebrate National Beer Day, a day that recognizes the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage in the world. The holiday s origins extend all the way back to 1919 when Congress passed the 18th Amendment, which banned the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcohol in the U.S. This marked the beginning of the Prohibition era. But 14 years later, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Cullen-Harrison Act, which made selling and consuming low-alcohol beverages, including beer, legal again. The act passed on March 22, 1933, according to Time.com, but it didn t officially go into effect until April 7, 1933. National Beer Wholesalers Association reported that in 2019, the U.S. beer industry sold 203.1 million barrels of beer (1 barrel contains 31 gallons).
