Limerick s Agri All-Stars are revealed - Limerick Leader

Limerick’s Agri All-Stars are revealed Reporter: );   ); LIMERICK has swept the boards at the Irish Holstein Friesian Association (IHFA) Champion Cow of the Decade competition just like in the GAA All-Stars. IHFA held the novel event in conjunction with the National Dairy Show. “The competition helped fill a void when the annual large, indoor show could not take place,” said an IHFA spokesperson. And Limerick pedigree breeders virtually took home the Champion, Reserve Champion and Honourable Mention accolades. In first place was Ridgefield Dundee Portea owned by Patrick, Breda and Derrick Frawley, Croagh. Reserve Champion was Baldonnel Goldie Larissa owned by Tadhg Bourke, Kilfinny, Adare and Cyril Dowling.

It s a brave man who would look to make his fortune milking cows with little if any experience of agriculture let alone dairy farming but it s one which Irishman, Peter Hynes has embraced to such an extent that he now owns one of the highest genetic merit herds in the country. Over the past 10 years, Peter and his wife Paula have improved both the productivity and profitability of what began as a traditional 50-cow milking herd based just outside Aherla Co Cork , into one that has not only more than trebled in size but also boasts numerous industry accolades for efficiency and genetic improvment.

Offspring “She has bred a fantastic line of cows in our herd,” says Derrick Frawley, who is now running the 200-cow herd with his father, Pat. “We have about ten of her offspring in the herd at present and they are one of the best families of cows that we have.”

Peter Hynes: The data doesn t lie: why genotyping and EBI are key to dairy profitability

The cows are finally all dried of and a well earned break is now on the agenda. As much as the cows will gain some body condition, I have no doubt I will do the same over the festive season. After a hectic year, I have every intention of enjoying this Christmas. It will be a different one to what most of are used to, but staying positive is key. The quiet time on the farm has allowed me time to look at data on the genetic gain of our herd as I prepare my presentation and paper for the British Cattle Breeders conference in January.
