As warmer temperatures entice boaters back in greater numbers onto the West Virginia’s lakes, rivers and streams, the state Division of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
National Safe Boating Week is May 22 to 28 and marks the official launch of the 2021 Safe Boating Campaign.Â
 As COVID-19 restrictions loosen, it is expected more people will be taking to Cayuga Lake this summer for boating, sailing, paddling, and fishing. The U.S. Coast Guard estimates that human error accounts for most boating accidents and that wearing a life jacket could prevent nearly 86% of boating fatalities, according to the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response.Â
 In addition to wearing an approved life vest every time you are on the water, boaters should also:Â
â¢File a float plan so someone onshore knows when and where you are going and when you are expected back.Â
Boating accidents at their highest in almost a decade
The report shows the most common reason for those accidents in Palm Beach County was the driver not paying attention.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â National Safe Boating Week runs from May 22- May 28 and the Florida Wildlife and Conservation Commission wants to make sure you are safe on the water, with Memorial Day just a week away.
A recently released report from FWC shows the number of boating accidents per year is on the rise in Florida.
In 2020, FWC reported 836 boating accidents in the Sunshine State. That is the highest in nine years and above the average of 722.
