Two thirds of children use more than one screen at the same time after school, in the evenings and at weekends as part of increasingly sedentary lifestyles, according to new research at the University of Leicester.
An NIHR study of more than 800 adolescent girls between the ages of 11 and 14 identified worrying trends between screen use and lower physical activity - including higher BMI - as well as less sleep.
The use of concurrent screens (termed screen stacking ) grew over the course of the week - with 59% of adolescents using two or more screens after school, 65% in the evenings, and 68% at weekends.
Rift Valley Fever – Mauritania
The Ministry of Health (MoH) notified WHO that between 13 September and 1 October 2020, eight cases of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) including seven deaths were confirmed in animal breeders. Districts affected include Tidjikja and Moudjéria (Tagant region), Guerou (Assaba region) and Chinguetty (Adrar region). Laboratory confirmation of RVF infection was performed using a reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) at the National Institute for Public Health Research (INRSP) in Nouakchott. The age of infected patients varied between 16 and 70 years old and included one woman and seven men. All seven deaths occurred among hospitalised patients with fever and haemorrhagic syndrome (petechia, gingivorrhagia) and vomiting.
The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) reports (computer translated) that two new cases were registered in Pichincha with the new variant (B1.1.7) of the COVID-19 virus, which was reported by the United Kingdom to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 14, 2020.
These cases respond to a 64-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl, without any relationship. The first one entered national territory with a negative RT-PCR test, on January 11, from the United Kingdom. The second patient did not register trips in the last six months. Both citizens receive medical treatment in two health houses in Quito.
This state portfolio, after the positive results of the genotification and the respective notification of the two new cases, activated several health brigades to lift the epidemiological fence around their relatives and close contacts, a strategy that is in charge of the National Directorate of Epidemiological surveillance.
