Marikana trial: Police commander says Mpembe took charge of the situation at Lonmin K3 shaft

The officer is testifying in the murder trial of Major-General William Mpembe and five other officers.  He will continue his testimony on Wednesday.   A Public Order Policing (POP) commander testified in the North West High Court in Mahikeng that he took a step back as operational commander at Lonmin K3 shaft in Marikana on 13 August 2012. The officer told the court he did so because his senior, former provincial deputy police commissioner, Major-General William Mpembe, asked him to step back. Mpembe then proceeded to take the lead.

The trial continues until 28 May.  A police officer struggled to contain himself at the Marikana trial in the North West High Court on Wednesday when he testified about the death of one of his colleagues on 13 August 2012 at Lonmin K3 shaft. State witness Sergeant Benjamin Mahume was being cross-examined for a second day by Jan Ellis, the lawyer representing former North West deputy police commissioner William Mpembe. The cross-examination was technical and focused on various aspects of what happened that day when police and striking miners clashed, resulting in the death of five people.

On Friday, 14 May 2021 Hawks members from the Durban Serious Organised Crime Investigation working together with Crime Intelligence, National Intervention Unit, Public Order Police, and Durban Metro K9 Unit arrested a 32-year-old suspect for dealing and possession of drugs in Phoenix. Members received information about drug dealing activities that were happening at Warehan Place in Phoenix. An undercover operation was conducted and police proceeded to the said premises. Upon searching the house, 5034 heroin capsules to the street value of approximately R45 000-00 were found. The suspect was immediately placed under arrest and charged accordingly. He is expected to appear in the Verulam Magistrates’ Court today.

R13m in drugs seized after SAPS bust three Western Cape operations in two days By Staff Reporter Share Cape Town - Police officers made a dent in the illegal drug trade in the Western Cape when they executed three major busts in two days. The Narcotics Organised Crime detectives with the Namaqualand K-9 unit intercepted large quantities of heroin, crystal meth and cocaine with a street value of R5.4 million, in the West Coast town of Vredendal on Tuesday, May 4. The consignment was destined for Cape Town. Two men and a woman, aged 32, 33 and 39, appeared in court on charges of dealing in and possession of drugs.
