It s “dead and buried and Merrill Lynch was the first one to attend the shiva,” says recruiter Danny Sarch.
But others say it will always have a small place in helping advisors build business.
Social media, referrals and more use of advisor teams are more effective than cold calling.
The widely reported recent decision by Merrill Lynch Wealth Management to bar its 3,000 advisor trainees from making cold calls as part of the firm’s new training program is perhaps the surest sign yet that if cold calling isn’t already dead, it’s getting there, according to industry experts interviewed by ThinkAdvisor.

A vehicle-protection insurer has threatened legal action against Rep. David Schweikert if he attacks the Phoenix-based company while potentially battling one of its former employees in a GOP primary race.
CarGuard Administration said it sent the campaign of Schweikert, R-Ariz., a letter saying the company was unfairly tied to a 2020 lawsuit falsely claiming they engaged in illegal robocalls after one of its former executives, Elijah Norton, announced he was considering challenging Schweikert in a GOP primary next year.
The pushback is an early sign of a potentially heated primary for Schweikert, who hasn t faced any significant challenge from a fellow Republican since winning his Scottsdale-based 6th Congressional District seat over then-Rep. Ben Quayle, R-Ariz., when the district was created in 2012.
844 area code Location?
844 doesn’t have a physical location. It’s just the next in the series of “area codes” (800, 888, 877, 866, 855…) that allow for toll-free calling from anywhere in the United States.
The 844 area code was put into service in December 2013. 800 numbers, known for being toll-free for the caller, had simply run out of options. It became common to see 866 and 877 numbers that would provide the same service.
Currently, toll-free area codes in the U.S. are 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, and 888. These area codes have become commonplace and many people don’t question them as they were once linked to legitimate businesses, organizations, and government agencies.
