One public Michigan university is requiring COVID-19 vaccination for students. Will others do the same?

Michigan colleges and universities are announcing plans for in-person classes in the fall, and many are discussing whether or not students should have to get a COVID-19 vaccination before they arrive.
So far, only one of Michigan’s 15 public universities – Oakland University – has a COVID-19 vaccination requirement, according to Dan Hurley, president of the Michigan Association of State Universities.
Michigan State University is launching a student-only vaccine clinic Friday.
A recent survey conducted by the National Social Norms Center at MSU found more than 80% of MSU students plan to get the COVID-19 vaccine when it’s available to them. Now, the school is making appointments for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine specifically available to them inside of the MSU Pavilion.
Michigan State University Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen said there are 3,000 initial appointments available for the first week.
“It moves us even closer to a more typical fall semester at Michigan State University, he said.
So far, MSU is planning to hold 75% of undergraduate classes in-person in the fall. Classes will be offered in-person, hybrid, and some especially those that would traditionally fill large lecture halls will remain online.

I think it pretty much goes without saying, if you want a Covid-19 vaccine you can get one. The age has now been brought down to 16 and they are available EVERYWHERE. You literally just have to sign up and show up. They are making them more accessible to everyone as the numbers are going up. Way up. Michigan is in the top five of states with surging numbers. People are fearing a 4th wave.

I have had my first dose of the vaccine and am due for my second this coming Monday (April 12th). I will be there with bells on. I can t wait. I got the Moderna shot and I received it at the very same Pavilion that MSU students can start getting theirs at on Friday (April 9th).

Michigan State University is launching a student only vaccine clinic beginning Friday. 3,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine are being made available to students by appointment only.
Mary Stout is a senior at MSU and the director of Health, Safety and Wellness for the undergraduate student government at the university. She says she’s encouraged by the university’s focus on accessibility.
“I also am really glad that they re offering, you know, rides to and from students who maybe don t have cars, and we don t have a way to get around or be able to get their vaccines, because those are definitely things that I had concerns about, like just the accessibility of vaccine,” she said.
