NHS employers urged to do more for staff wellbeing beyond Covid-19

This year s International Workers Memorial Day had a special significance

Something very powerful and poignant happened today, though I don’t think it received much coverage in the mainstream media and, therefore, may have escaped the public’s attention. A minute’s silence was held at noon to remember and honour all those health and social care workers around the world who have died in the past year amid the coronavirus pandemic. It is believed at least 17,000 health workers globally have died from Covid-19 in the past 12 months Each year on 28 April, unions around the globe unite to pay tribute to those who have died in the course of their work. But nursing leaders noted that this year’s International Workers Memorial Day had a special significance for those working in health and care in wake of Covid-19.

New technology launched in Dorset GP surgeries to help prevent heart failure

NEW cutting edge health services are being rolled out across Dorset GP surgeries to combat risks around heart failure and disease – in a move that will also relieve pressure on the healthcare system. A breakthrough remote patient monitoring platform, called Hypertension Plus (H+) is to be used by Dorset’s Clinical Commissioning Group to help doctors and patients better manage and treat high blood pressure and its related conditions. It allows NHS clinicians manage a patient’s medication plan remotely, based on the patient’s home blood pressure results. The platform, developed by OMRON Healthcare enables patients to regularly enter readings from home, which are delivered to GPs via the cloud. H+ then automatically creates highly tailored medication and treatment programmes for doctors to review and enact as they see fit.

If you don t act, the changes you want won t be realised

One of the best jobs I ever had was in general practice. I loved working in a small team, being able to make changes to meet patient and family needs, and I liked measuring the impact of what we were doing. Yes, I love clinical audit. The measurement of what works is important – it is what helps us to lead effective care delivery. I started working in general practice in 1988 and, at that time, the practice nurse role was new, and I was the first in my area. However, the profession grew – initially because we became invaluable if practices were to achieve their required income following the changes to general practice contracting, but ultimately, we grew because we were great at looking after patients with long-term conditions, at screening, at prevention – and much more besides. I had great expectations that nurses would be leading the primary care revolution, which would, in turn, redefine care models across population health needs as opposed to organisational boundaries.
