San Diego cyclists call for extra protection after multiple deaths
A group of San Diego cyclists Monday called for the city to implement more protections for bicyclists after at least five people have been killed in bike-related crashes in a month.

San Diego (KGTV)- Members of the bicycling community are calling for the City of San Diego to take action after five cyclists were killed in one month. The group wants protection on the roads and the city to make changes by the end of the year.
A large group gathered at Bird Park in Balboa Park, remembering the life of one of their own tragically killed while riding to work.
Twelve people have been killed in San Diego County so far this year, with five of those deaths taking place within just the past 30 days.
“Grief makes you angry,” San Diego Bicycle Coalition executive director Andy Hanshaw said. If there’s not a dedicated path that’s seperate from the road, then we need a safer bike lane on the street, and your typical white stripe is not safe enough.”
Beloved bicyclist and San Diego State University administrator Laura Shinn was killed on Pershing Drive last Tuesday. Police said she was in the bike lane, wearing a helmet, when a driver hit her from behind.
