IPOB interview: NBC fines Channels TV, Inspiration FM N5m each

Punch Newspapers Sections Channels TV and Inspiration FM Lagos. The commission’s acting Director-General, Armstrong Idachaba, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja. Idachaba said the broadcast stations were fined for infractions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. In arriving at the fine, he said the NBC reviewed the appeals and apologies from both stations and decided to set aside the option of suspension of licence. He recalled that the Commission had on April 26, 2021 sent a letter to Channels TV stating the station’a infractions of the code in respect to its broadcast of “Politics Today”  April 25.

Punch Newspapers Sections Published 27 April 2021 The National Broadcasting Commission on Tuesday said Channels Television has apologised over its infraction of the broadcasting code. NBC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs Franca Aiyetan, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja. Aiyetan explained that the commission’s letter to the TV station was a regulatory instrument to check the excesses of the station called “the bridge letter “. She said that the intent of the letter was neither to close down nor sanction the station, rather it was meant to draw the station’s attention to its breach of the broadcasting code, adding that “the station has accordingly apologised’’.

Punch Newspapers Sections Friday Olokor, Abuja Friday Olokor, Abuja Published 26 April 2021 The National Broadcasting Commission on Monday wielded its big stick on Channels Television by ordering an immediate stoppage of one of its programmes, ‘Politics Today’. The commission said it took the decision following the a live interview the station had with the spokesperson for the Indigenous People of Biafra, Emma Powerful. The acting Director-General of NCC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, took the decision in a letter to the Managing Director of Channels TV titled, ‘Inciting Comments By Proscribed Group: Politics Today’. According to him, the IPOB leader made several secessionist and inciting declarations on air without caution or reprimand by Channels TV.
