Especially now, we can t thank our teachers enough

Especially now, let s show our appreciation for teachers

By Roger Eddy Every year, we take time to celebrate School Principals’ Day on May 1 and National Teacher Appreciation Day on May 4. The Appreciation Day for teachers has now turned into National Teacher Appreciation Week, and this year was celebrated May 2-8. Back in the early 1950s, the idea of honoring our teachers originally came from Eleanor Roosevelt, former first lady of the United States and wife of President Franklin Roosevelt. In 1980, the idea took on increased publicity and grew from that time into a rather significant day and week, when we routinely and officially give kudos to these people who have dedicated their lives to educating our young people.

Teacher appreciation: Our role in encouraging excellence

Quick Read By Jacqueline Adams Correspondent Great teachers have a passion for their subject matter, and communicating that passion stays with students for decades. My friend Marco’s high school forensics teacher is a good example. He emailed: “Bonnie Miller pushed us out of our comfort zones, inspired us to think creatively, write fast and fearlessly, and speak extemporaneously in events ranging from SPAR [spontaneous argumentation] to impromptu speaking – five minutes to prepare a five-minute talk on a random topic that we picked from a hat.” Why We Wrote This Our columnist collects stories about great teachers. COMMENTARY: There s one gift most teachers really appreciate

By John A. Tures WHAT DO teachers really appreciate for a “thank you” at the end of the year? While teachers love gifts, there’s something else they really like as well, perhaps even more than anything you can buy. Back in 1953, former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt lobbied Congress to create a National Teacher Appreciation Day. In 1984, the National Parent Teacher Association moved it from March to May, and gave teachers a well-deserved week of appreciation. There are plenty of online sites where you can buy a teacher a gift. And don’t forget to buy local, too! But here’s something teachers really, really love: when their students bring their “A” game in the classroom and on assignments.
