United Kingdom-Australia Antarctic co-operation priorities: 2021 to 2026

The UK and Australia have identified priority areas for 2021 to 2026, to develop their historical close co-operation on Antarctic and Southern Ocean issues. The UK and Australia delegations to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM), the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and their National Antarctic Programmes agreed these priorities.

The Chilean Bernardo O Higgins Station in Antarctica. The General Bernardo O Higgins Riquelme base is located close to the northernmost tip of the Antarctic Peninsula in West Antarctica well away from Australia’s bases in East Antarctica. The Australian Antarctic Division is seeking official confirmation with Chilean authorities. The Chilean station in question, according to the Australian Antarctic Division, is located is more than 4500 kilometres from the nearest Australian Antarctic research station. All 36 people have reportedly been evacuated to Chile, where they are reported to be isolating and in good condition. The station personnel were replaced by a new crew who had been quarantined and tested negative prior to their journey.
