Winners of Adrian VFW student essay, speech scholarship programs announced

ADRIAN Two Lenawee County students have been named the winners of the 2020-21 VFW Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen Essay programs.
Mario Garcia, a junior at Madison High School, was the first-place winner in the Voice of Democracy essay contest, and Erin Mehan, an eighth grader at Springbrook Middle School in Adrian, penned the winning essay in the sixth-eighth grade Patriots Pen division.
Garcia’s winning essay was titled “Is This the Country our Founders Envisioned?” and Mehan’s essay was written on the topic of “What Patriotism Means to Me.”

CRYSTAL FALLS The Tufts-Rondon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2891 has chosen Trent Kannich, a sixth-grade student at Forest Park School, as the winner of the VFW’s 2020 Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest.
He will represent the Tufts-Rondon VFW Post 2891 and its Auxiliary at the district level. He wrote his winning essay based on this year’s theme, “What Patriotism Means to Me.”
The VFW enacted the Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition in 1995 as a way to encourage young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society while improving their writing skills.
