Many companies scaled back and canceled internships during the pandemic, but DeKalb County is helping build young professionals resumes with virtual internships.
DeKALB COUNTY, Ga. - Hundreds of paid, virtual internship opportunities are up for grabs in DeKalb and as of Monday night, 3,000 young people had applied.
The positions are strictly for county youth, but DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond says the extra cash could help families bring in extra cash.
The coronavirus changed just about everything, including summer internships.

FULTON COUNTY, GA Superintendent Mike Looney recently announced Noel Maloof will become the new chief operations officer for Fulton County Schools. The cabinet-level position oversees the non-instructional functions that support the school district, such as capital programs, facilities services, operational planning, school nutrition, and transportation. Mr. Maloof is an exceptional addition to our Fulton County Schools leadership team, said Superintendent Mike Looney. In addition to relevant regional, district-level experience with operations, he brings a depth of school-based leadership experience as a former principal, assistant principal, and teacher.
Rainsville and Fort Payne will host events next Thursday in observance of The National Day of Prayer 2021 and all DeKalb County residents are invited to attend.
Founded in 1952, The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for our nation.
Rainsville Ministers welcome back the third annual National Day of Prayer event on Thursday, May 6, at 12 p.m. at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum. Rainsville is inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. The event starts at noon in the parking lot of the coliseum. In case of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors into the coliseum.
DeKalb County Superintendent Jason Barnett announced Monday night he is the top contender to serve as Guntersville City Superintendent of Education. I consider this a great honor and a statement of support not only for me but specifically in regard for the great work that we have accomplished in DeKalb County, he said.
Pending board approval, Barnett will replace Guntersville City Interim Superintendent Ric Ayer. It was a very hard decision, a lot of time and thought went into this, said Barnett. While considering leaving home is hard and the timing may never seem right, God directs our path and His timing and plan is perfect.
A community memorial ceremony will be held at the DeKalb County Tornado Monument and Memorial and Serenity Gardens on April 24 beginning at 2 p.m.
The special event is dedicated to the lives lost and those united in care and recovery, including the recognition of surviving family and friends and emergency responders.
On April 27, 2011, 62 tornadoes ravaged Alabama in one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in the nation s history. In the outcome of those storms, there were 248 people killed in Alabama on that day. A monument that bears the names of 35 of those victims rests under the cantilever of the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum.
