Labor plays down the Coalition s major win | Sky News Australia

Deputy Opposition Leader Richard Marles has played down the Coalition's major win in the Upper Hunter by-election, saying the result will not have implications federally. New South Wales Labor has not conceded defeat in the Upper Hunter yet but the National Party looks set to retain the seat. Mr Marles told Sky News linking the result to Federal Labor would be an over-reaction. The Deputy Labor Leader also denied internal splits over the new Kuri Kuri gas plant played a role in his party's defeat and said divisions over coal and gas are not a concern for Labor going forward.

On 5 May, NSW Labor’s systems were taken offline after the party fell victim to a ransomware attack by a hacker group known as Avaddon. The ransomware attack works by sending phishing emails with attachments that look like images but contain malware that steals and encrypts sensitive data. The hacker group then threatens to not only block the organisation accessing it, but to publish the sensitive data. The group also threatens the organisation with distributed denial of service attacks that would keep their systems offline.

EXCLUSIVE: Nurses at breaking point in regional areas

Representatives for the Nurses and Midwives Association say there is a crisis which is getting worse because nurses are leaving regional areas in droves. A lot of the time in regional hospitals there are only two nurses on shifts and they’re working in isolation, often doing double shifts. There are also doctor shortages which forces nurses to deal with issues doctors normally would – which they are untrained for. Submissions to a parliamentary inquiry looking into a critical doctor shortage and health outcomes in regional and rural New South Wales closes on Friday. Nationals leader John Barilaro admits there are problems in regional health but attracting doctors to rural areas is a complex issue. New South Wales Labor has been calling for the inquiry since October 2019 and says the shortage is because New South Wales Health has been cutting costs in the regions. The hearings of the inquiry will commence later in 2021.

NSW records 10 new cases as Victoria identifies three more

31 December 2020 1:46pm While New South Wales’ community transmitted Covid-19 cases continue to rise in numbers, Premier Gladys Berejiklian faces backlash over allowing the cricket Test at the SCG to take place. New South Wales Labor leader, Jodi McKay, has called on her to stop crowds from attending urging state government to make masks mandatory in certain settings such as places of worship, supermarkets and on public transport. “Why are we now progressing with a crowd at the cricket? … It just doesn’t make sense to me,” he said. “I’m urging the premier to make sure the cricket goes ahead … but there is a general feeling there should not be people at the cricket. We shouldn’t have people attending the cricket. We need to make that call now.”
