BERGENFIELD More than 100 firefighters from at least a dozen communities responded to help put out a five-alarm blaze Saturday afternoon at a commercial building that contains several businesses on South Washington Avenue.
No one was injured in the fire, which took about 80 minutes to get under control after firefighters were called at about 1:45 p.m., said Christopher Naylis, the public information officer for the Bergenfield Fire Department.
He said two of the businesses in the one-story building could not be occupied after suffering from fire and smoke damage – a jewelry store and a vacant area that Naylis said used to be a juice bar and has been under construction. A total of about eight businesses are in the building, he said.

A five-alarm fire in Bergenfield remained under investigation Sunday, a day after 125 firefighters from a dozen towns responded to the blaze at a row of stores, a fire official said.
The businesses, located in a century-old downtown structure, were unoccupied at the time of the Saturday afternoon fire. No firefighters were injured despite heavy smoke and difficulty battling the blaze due to three layers of ceilings in the single-story structure, said Christopher Naylis, a Bergenfield Fire Department spokesperson.

Firefighters extinguished a Saturday afternoon blaze before it could cause widespread damage to a Bergenfield commercial strip.
Four alarms were sounded, given the risk, after the accidental fire broke out shortly before 2 p.m. on the roof of a South Washington Avenue building just south of Bedford Avenue where work was being done, responders said.
It was quickly contained and declared under control about an hour later.
No injuries were reported.

On Wednesday, April 7, at 3:14 p.m., on the 20000 block of County Highway 22, Detroit Lakes, a caller reported their grandmother had sent $6,700 to an out-of-state phone scammer. Law enforcement officials believe the scammer had the victim send the package containing the money, via mail, to a vacant residence and the scammer picked it up once it arrived.
