Bergenfield 5-alarm fire put out by firefighters from a dozen towns

BERGENFIELD  More than 100 firefighters from at least a dozen communities responded to help put out a five-alarm blaze Saturday afternoon at a commercial building that contains several businesses on South Washington Avenue. No one was injured in the fire, which took about 80 minutes to get under control after firefighters were called at about 1:45 p.m., said Christopher Naylis, the public information officer for the Bergenfield Fire Department. He said two of the businesses in the one-story building could not be occupied after suffering from fire and smoke damage – a jewelry store and a vacant area that Naylis said used to be a juice bar and has been under construction. A total of about eight businesses are in the building, he said.
