KLCC s Tiffany Eckert reports on an uptick of bat rabies cases in Lane and Deschutes counties.
A fourth bat with rabies has been identified in Lane County and one case of bat Rabies has also been discovered in Deschutes County. Somewhat unusual this early in the year, health officials say.

Rabies is endemic in the bat population. However, health officials say it’s somewhat unusual to see so many sick bats this early in the year.
The fourth Lane County case of 2021 was discovered by a South Eugene resident who collected the bat on their property and turned it over to Environmental Health.

“It’s a store decision even though we knew it wasn’t going to be a fun decision.”
Helen Bollinger is the manager at South Eugene Liquor. She said throughout the pandemic, her store has been busy. They can see from 300 and 800 customers a day. She and her nine employees feel protected in masks.
The College Hill Reservoir in Eugene will be closed for the Fourth of July holiday weekend and fireworks are prohibited on the property grounds.
The gate is closed to public access to the top of the water storage reservoir on College Hill in Eugene.

Eugene Water & Electric Board closes the water storage facility each year to protect its roof. EWEB’s Joe Harwood said they started restricting public access on 4th of July several years ago.
“And the reason we had to do that is, unfortunately, there were people that were setting off fireworks, which can damage the roof and the rubberized coating on that roof and potentially impact drinking water quality,” Harwood told KLCC
