Hundreds of injuries of Barnsley s roads | Barnsley Chronicle

× ROAD traffic collisions caused more than 400 injuries - including nine fatalities - on Barnsley’s roads last year, new figures have revealed. Barnsley’s number of fatal collisions has fallen since the year prior, according to the Department for Transport (DfT) statistics - but it has trebled since 2015 when there were just three. The majority of the 444 casualties - 329, or 74.3 per cent - were deemed as causing ‘slight’ injuries, a 17.7 per cent drop since the previous year and more than 50 per cent down on the yearly average from 2010 to 2014. But fatal injuries on Barnsley’s road network account for almost a third of all South Yorkshire’s 30 deaths in 2020.

Anti-speeding measures to be brought in at hotspot

× CAMPAIGNERS battling for anti-speeding measures near a busy school have expressed their delight after Barnsley Council’s highways bosses announced 20mph warning signs will be installed by the summer. Members of Speed Awareness Group Ardsley (SAGA) formed three years ago as a result of witnessing frequent near-misses on Doncaster Road, which has a 40mph limit. Although the road’s speed camera has been decommissioned and will be removed due to a low strike rate - despite campaigners claiming cars have been spotted driving at twice the limit - nearby Oakhill Primary School will receive a ‘much-needed’ intervention. It’s also been confirmed that mobile speed operations - carried out by South Yorkshire Police - will also step up on Doncaster Road.
