Utilities balk, could fight over plan to raise Keystone Heights lakes

A state agency’s bid to protect water levels at Clay County’s shrunken Keystone Heights lakes is getting pushback from utilities including JEA, which on Monday could challenge plans that depend on pumping water through a 17-mile pipeline. JEA likes the St. Johns River Water Management District’s plan to build the pipeline from Black Creek but worries it could be stuck paying an “inequitable” bill for $13 million. “While we support the project … we have to do that with the customers in mind and what the financial impact might be,” CEO Jay Stowe told his board before it gave him a free hand last week to challenge the water agency (if needed) over a proposed rule to safeguard water levels in Lake Brooklyn and Lake Geneva.

Near 10,000 acre prescribed fire at Blue Cypress Conservation Area set by water district

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY   A state water agency used helicopters to start a nearly 10,000-acre prescribed fire at a wetland conservation area along the St. Johns River, a spokesperson said. Land managers began the controlled burn at Blue Cypress Conservation Area outside Fellsmere shortly before 11 a.m. Wednesday, and were expected to complete the 9,600-acre fire by the end of the day, said Teresa Monson with the St. Johns River Water Management District. The agency is tasked with ensuring drinking water and the health of waterbodies and wetlands along the north-flowing St. Johns River watershed that stretches over 18 counties from Indian River County to Nassau County, according to the district.

Florida springs advocates criticize DeSantis over budget plan

The region’s springs and rivers were left relatively dry in the proposed budget of Gov. Ron DeSantis and any hope for more money for programs and land conservation now lies with the Florida Legislature, advocates said. Ryan Smart of the Florida Springs Council said a disproportionate amount of money raised statewide for water projects is once again going south to the Everglades. “Springs and North Florida’s waters are being left behind by the DeSantis administration,” Smart said. “They are proposing $473 million for Everglades restoration, a $150 million increase over last year but not one extra cent to protect springs and rivers.”
