Monse and Tim Hines, owners of Monse’s Taste of El Salvador, 2428 W. Colorado Ave., has been joined by Kate Firoved, who owns Carnelian Coffee Co. in the front space of the restaurant.
The coffee shop offers a long list of espresso drinks with some unique pours of house-made syrups. There is a figgy pudding latte with fig and brown sugar syrup, espresso and milk, topped with spices and dried figs. And there is a honey lavender latte with honey and lavender syrup, espresso and milk, topped with lavender sugar. Italian sodas and kombucha are also on the menu. Citrus fruits are Mother Nature’s gift of vitamin C during the winter, just in time to chase away the sniffles. The bright colors of oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit are a welcome relief to gray winter days; their juice is a refreshing treat; and they’re packed with ascorbic acid and antioxidants.
Today, we take a look at some of their less familiar cousins also rich in vitamin C. Think kumquats, pummelos, and pomegranates and we’re throwing in pineapples because we love them.
Kumquats are about the size of a large grape. Unlike other citrus, the peel of the kumquat is sweet and edible, while the juicy flesh is tart. They add a nice snap of flavor in salads. They can be found at Middle Eastern markets fresh or pickled in heavy syrup.
For the past 37 years, the National Kidney Foundation has presented the Great Chefs of the West, which traditionally brought 25 of Denver’s top chefs together in one place a large event center in Denver to compete for Best Dish. The winner would be decided by the diners in attendance.
This year, the event has been reimagined and renamed Great Chefs of the West: On the Go!, with fewer chefs participating. And this year, Colorado Springs’ own Brother Luck, chef owner of Four by Brother Luck, is in the game and will join five Denver restaurants in presenting their menus. This gives Colorado Springs residents the opportunity to participate without driving to the Mile High City.
