Rochdale is eyeing an exciting future as a ‘centre of manufacturing excellence’ after it was awarded £23.6m from the government’s Towns Fund.
It is one of 45 places across the country set to benefit from a £1bn tranche of funding for ‘left behind’ areas, announced in the budget.
Although just shy of the £25m bid for, it means a number of ambitious plans drawn up by the Rochdale Towns Fund board are set to go ahead.
These include 700 new homes in central Rochdale as part of the regeneration of Lower Falinge, major improvement to the A58 at St Mary’s Gate and new medium-sized units at Kingsway Business Park.

Rochdale has been named as one of the first towns to benefit from the government’s Towns Fund.
Rochdale will receive £23.6million to “support its emerging digital, manufacturing and creative sectors – while helping the town centre to become a vibrant and attractive destination for residents.”
A bid for £25million was made in December 2020, asking for money for projects including a new advanced machinery and productivity institute at Kingsway Business Park, developing the proposal for hundreds of new homes on the site of Central Retail Park, supporting delivery and improvements to hundreds of homes (led by Rochdale Boroughwide Housing), developing brownfield sites for housing; and improving crossing points and additional walking or cyclin
